If someone asked me about nursing excellence, I would direct them to Lukas because he embodies exceptional patient care. Lukas was a calming presence amidst the uncertainty.
My pregnancy was a carefully orchestrated event at UCSF with multiple medical specialties because of my history. Therefore, when I went to the OB triage a week and half prior to my induction date, my world turned into chaos and confusion. I was admitted to be monitored for labor progression, and the decision was made to move me to Antenatal in the early afternoon.
Lukas Warren was my assigned nurse as he came on his evening shift. He was immediately attuned to my increasing pain, which was accompanied by contractions. A few hours later, my contractions were getting more uncomfortable and frequent. Lukas immediately noticed the change and maintained constant communication with the OB team. When I could not tolerate the intense contractions, he calmly explained the analgesic options, showed positions that relieved the labor pain and even involved my husband so he did not feel left out. Despite my anxiety, Lukas continued to be kind and encouraging. Instantly, Lukas gathered the OB team and I was instructed to start pushing.
When my son arrived, he was breathing but had some fluids in his lungs. Again, Lukas noticed the change and brought the pediatric team in to support my baby. My baby went to the NICU for observation and my husband accompanied the baby, leaving me in the L&D room alone. Lukas stayed in the room and chatted with me while I had my late dinner. I knew Lukas had charting to do but he chose to keep me company. Given how chaotic the day turned out to be, Lukas's company after delivery helped keep my spirit up, something that I am still so thankful for.
If someone asked me about nursing excellence, I would direct them to Lukas because he embodies exceptional patient care. Lukas was a calming presence amidst the uncertainty. He was my advocate to the OB team and sprung into action when called. He was my coach during the laboring process and gave me reassurance and confidence. Also, he was my impromptu photographer. Because of him, I have pictures of the moment my son and I saw each other for the first time. My husband and I were too stunned to remember to capture the delivery. I am forever thankful Lukas was my nurse that day. As a medical professional, it is truly different to be on the other side. To Lukas - We are so thankful you were our nurse on the day our son arrived. We will always remember you and we wish you all the very best in your future endeavors as a midwife, and we know all your future soon-to-be mothers and newborns are in the best of hands!
