Luke was the preop holding nurse. He had a patient come in who was scheduled for a bladder Botox injection with the Urology Service. While Luke was interviewing the patient, the patient mentioned he had a skin lesion on his angle that he would like removed and asked if that was possible while he was in the OR. Luke contracted his charge nurse to ask whether this was something we could do for this veteran, and was instructed to contact General Surgery to ask whether they would be willing to see the patient. He contacted the surgeon, who agreed to come look at the patient. The surgeon saw him in the pre-op holding area and agreed that the lesion could be removed during his OR visit. Luke assisted the surgeon in completing the necessary paperwork. Luke ensured the team in the OR and Anaesthesia were notified of the additional procedure. This Veteran was able to have this additional procedure completed during this OR visit thanks to Luke listening to the Veteran, doing the extra work to coordinate the surgeon, anaesthesia, extra OR time, and, most of all, personalised Veteran care.
