Luke Saile is an outstanding example of insightful, compassionate care. Luke was an oncology nurse. My brother was devastated when he realized his esophageal cancer had so advanced that the last days of his life would be spent in inpatient hospice. He wondered how much care a dying man would be given. Luke gave him extraordinary care!
Luke worked midnights and after completing report, always made a brief visit to all of his patients before providing his more comprehensive care. Luke had a sense of J's condition and strongly encouraged me one evening to take J outside in a wheelchair. We went and J so enjoyed the sunlight, the breeze, the singing birds and the beauty of the Healing Garden.
J was never able to repeat this moment. It's memory provided healing for me!
My brother was embarrassed how he had neglected himself. His toenails needed trimming. Luke took note of this and requested a podiatry consult. J could not believe it when podiatry came and trimmed his nails. He felt so special! Thanks Luke!
J was to die in a few days. Luke helped make J's final days reflect moments of grace and beauty.
