We came to Piedmont Hospital when my dad, who has dementia, fell backward on the pavement and hit his head and hip. He suffered a brain bleed and had a broken leg. Daddy has already been in the ICU for five days. In the ICU, Daddy had a few episodes of not wanting to stay in his chair when he was supposed to stay awake. He wasn't able to have his usual medication that helps his agitation because he wasn't able to pass the swallow test. Luke came in to help calm Daddy down. He spoke to Daddy in a soothing manner and called him "Mr. J". He quietly explained to Daddy why he was in the hospital. He told Daddy he had to sit up to build his strength so he could get better. Another day, when Daddy got angry and threatened to yank off his blood pressure cuff and other things to which he was attached, Luke quickly came into the room to ensure that Daddy was safe. He talked Daddy down. He has a rare talent for dealing with a dementia patient. Luke is extraordinary. Sometimes I have a lot of trouble getting Daddy to cooperate, so I appreciate Luke's help so much. Luke sets the bar high for all the other nurses!
