She was very reassuring, calm, and jovial, which made me laugh and smile. She gave me a special rainbow knitted hat for my special rainbow baby, which made me and my husband cry.
I have lost 3 babies, and this was my rainbow miracle baby at 40 years old. I suffer from anxiety, and on the day of my C-section, I was under considerable stress. Lydia was aware of my history and my birth preferences that I had given my community midwife from the get-go. She was on time and prepared us for every step of the way. While also acknowledging the sort of staff they were on that day, and how busy the ward was. I never felt that, though, as she was really going above and beyond with her time. She was very reassuring, calm, and jovial, which made me laugh and smile. She gave me a special rainbow knitted hat for my special rainbow baby, which made me and my husband cry. She tended to my husband when he showed signs of distress. We mentioned the baby loss we went through last year, and she immediately asked for the name and if I wanted L to be acknowledged and remembered in the delivery room, which I did, and it happened. Lydia remembered to do it. Affirming L’s existence and acknowledging the rainbow status of this baby (J) was incredible for us and empowering. Lydia narrated everything and kept me calm by placing her hands on my cheeks and keeping eye contact, which is the way to go for people suffering from anxiety disorder, while we were in the operating theatre. But also kept chatting with me while I had my spinal, bringing in the chat the helping nurse and the anaesthesiologist there. She was exuding being “in charge” and coordinating everyone in a very competent way (even if that wasn’t the case, it seemed like it to me, and that’s all that matters). She respected all my birth preferences and made sure they were followed in the operating theatre. She was very gentle and loving with my baby J and I couldn’t ask for more support or another midwife than her. I really got the one that was a match for me and my circumstances. Thank you, Lydia, we will remember you forever!
