Yesterday we were fortunate to have Lynn for our nurse when we brought our 3-year-old in with dehydration and lethargy. I usually hate going to the hospital as I have always seen it as a place where you are treated as a number, rather than a person. But, thanks to Lynn, my view is different now. It was such a busy night, with so many patients to care for. Yet Lynn managed to make time to treat us like human beings. She took the time to introduce herself to our child and play with her. She told her that there were "fishies in her belly - want to listen?". I saw her smile for the first time in days. We were there for 6 hours and during that entire time, I never saw her sit down or even take a moment to catch her breath. And for all that, she always had a smile on her face, encouraging others and helping them feel better. I think medicine today has become so clinical, at times, that it can be easy to lose the humanity of it. It can be easy to forget that, although this is the doctor's 100th patient, this is that person's only child. Even if the doctor has seen this ailment hundreds of times, the parents have not, and their worry is real. Lynn took the time to bridge that gap - to make sure that we understood everything, and had all of our questions answered, even though you were so busy. We never felt rushed. We were treated with the utmost care. Somehow, she made us feel as if we were her only patient, so good and so attentive was your care of us. That is truly a gift. It takes somebody very special to go out of her way to show genuine concern for the welfare of others. It takes a beautiful, genuine heart to make time to tell my son that his sister will be ok and to get him a toy too so he doesn't worry. It takes a beautiful soul to genuinely care for others. Colleges may be able to teach medicine. They may even be able to teach professionalism. But they cannot teach care. That is something that only a few wonderful people have, naturally. And they use this gift all their lives through, making the sufferings of others more bearable through the beauty of their gift. Lynn, you are such a person. From the bottom of our heart, we thank her for taking such good care of us. Your kindness made an exhausting, overwhelming night so much more bearable, and we are truly thankful.
