Lynne Hayes is an incredible nurse who is well known among her colleagues for her wealth of nursing knowledge and team leadership, but she is even more known for her consistent delivery of excellent compassionate care to all her patients regardless of circumstance. She is often praised by patients and families for the trusting therapeutic relationships she consistently develops with all patients and families and it is evident in their praise for her that they are confident in the care she that she provides. There are several examples of this over the past year but I will share the following two cases that evidently had a significantly positive impact and outcome for multiple individuals involved as a direct result of Lynne’s care. I had a colleague of Lynne’s reach out to me to express just how touched they were with the care that Lynne provided to a patient with significantly progressive dementia. This patient developed noticeably distressing and progressive agitation and anxiety that was not being well managed despite multiple efforts with medications, stuffed animals, and other suggested interventions. It was not until Lynne purchased with her own money one of those life like baby dolls of the same ethnicity as the patient did the patient find true comfort and relief from her anxiety and agitation. The team members who provided follow up visits shared their witness to a beautiful human moment between this patient and her new baby doll as a result of the compassionate and dignified care provided by Lynne. Lynne also recently took care of a 39-year-old beautiful patient with a rare form of breast cancer on top of heartbreaking circumstances. The patient really liked Lynne as a person and truly appreciated her company. Team members would often find Lynne just sitting with the patient and being present in the moment with her, listening to her life stories, holding her hand, providing support, and inspiring the patient to be in control of her life in her final days. Lynne helped the patient find peace at 39 years old. She then sat vigil with the patient’s mother in her final hours continuing to provide the type of compassionate, empathetic, and reliable care that Lynne is known to provide to all her patients. Lynne is truly an incredible nurse and this is just one of the many reasons why Lynne is our nomination for The DAISY Award.
