Lynsey eventually just held him to her chest in a hug and comforted him while he sobbed.
We had a 9 year old behavioral patient arrive alone in the ED who was from a difficult background. He was extremely anxious and tearful, did not speak much English, and had a trauma history that made it difficult for him to cope. Lynsey was the charge nurse and was alerted to the situation as this patient had several security guards and police in his room plus other staff. Lynsey was able to help this patient be less restrained so he felt safe, got down on his level, and talked softly to him giving him appropriate choices. Lynsey eventually just held him to her chest in a hug and comforted him while he sobbed. He was able to stop crying and calm down enough to receive appropriate care. He was given a stress ball and offered drinks and food and finally fell asleep as he felt safe after being comforted by Lynsey. Lynsey showed true compassion at that moment but she is always great with all of her patients and families. She goes above and beyond in every situation and I’m so grateful to work with her.
