We had a very critically ill patient on vent support in the ICU with a complex, rapidly progressing infection requiring a higher level of care/surgery. Lyra Smith was on the case the second she was informed of the need for transfer. She relentlessly called all tertiary hospitals, and despite facing many obstacles and roadblocks, particularly this being a holiday week with particularly difficult insurance to navigate. She could be heard pleading, urging, and calling anyone she could reach, including the operator, case manager, escalation manager, and access coordinator - yet still being placed on hold for hours at a time or being given roadblock after roadblock. Lyra, despite her frustrations, maintained a professional yet stern demeanor, determined to get the patient to the necessary destination to receive the proper intervention and surgery required for survival. Luckily, despite working with such a challenging insurance carrier, she managed to pull through, and the patient was transferred to UCLA for his surgery. Her passion for patient care and unselfish desire to help others is truly a gift, and I am so honored to have her as a colleague.
