Carmelita took the time to listen to me and advocate for me when I was feeling at my worst.
I was admitted into the hospital during COVID-19 times where no visitors are allowed. This can be a very lonely and frustrating time for patients especially while they are sick and cannot think straight. Carmelita was my shift nurse for a couple of nights during my first week and then a few nights in a row during my second week’s stay. She was visibly busy with patients though I know not of what the others were diagnosed with or what their specific needs were. Carmelita took the time to listen to me and advocate for me when I was feeling at my worst. I seriously thought I wasn't going to go home; that I was going to die here in this bed. It was the worst feeling I have ever experienced and I was the sickest I have ever been in my life.
She was there... for my sporadic crying episodes of fear and pain to having difficulty coping and trying to sleep in a hospital. I am a nurse myself and the care that Carmelita provided to me was humbling. She made me feel comfortable with her in a time where I had no one. This is what a nurse does. We advocate for our patients. We go the extra mile when we see our patients struggling whether it be with pain or with frustrations or fear. Our jobs are versatile.
So thank you, Carmelita. I felt safe with you and this is not an easy task for another nurse to give up her power to another especially in a time in need. I feel lucky to have had you as my nurse. I don't know if I would have made it those nights without you. Thank you. You are outstanding. You are compassionate. You are an amazing nurse but also most importantly, you are a kind, humble and caring human being. I feel I needed both during my time at NorthBay. So thank you from the bottom of my heart.
