She straightened my bed sheets and formed my pillow into the most comfortable mound I’d found, and she reassured me with a ‘together finger grasp.’
The face that has stayed with me these several days since my hospitalization on 9E is of Mabel Lau, a night nurse. She was not just kind; she was also doing her job. She had read the notes about me. I assume my chart notes described my cyclic state: four chronic diseases, continuous oxygen, AFib monitoring, Covid, plummeting platelets to critical, rounds of steroids to raise them, emotional highs and lows, restless legs, and inability to sleep much. Mabel came into my room, face full of compassion, hers an assured self. Her brief look of belief in me gave me a shot of strength. Her voice was pleasing, with a good sense of humor, and her stature was strong. She straightened my bed sheets and formed my pillow into the most comfortable mound I’d found, and she reassured me with a ‘together finger grasp.’ The doctor had prescribed a medicine for me to try that might help me sleep and also could quiet the anxiety. It did, over some time, quiet the anxiety, whew the relief, but still, I couldn’t sleep. Mabel suggested asking the night doctor if she could give me Melatonin, even though I had already taken another sleep dose, and that doctor approved. Mabel kept other personnel away from me, saying,” Let her sleep.’ I did sleep. She knew she had made a difference in my life, and she was glad. Mabel was extraordinarily present and stayed with me right where I was in myself. It is a hard scene to put into words of reality, but I will never forget that face and its determined expression to help me through my difficult time. Mabel is genuine and honest, perceptive in the most profound sense, and an asset at the highest professional level. Many thank you’s to her for this moving hospital experience.
