Macie Merrill, RN

One evening when I was admitted, the night nurse introduced herself as Macie. She dispensed meds and checked vital signs, after which I turned off the light, and tried to relax, expecting the sounds and peaceful sleep of the night before. However, in spite of all the usual preparations, I was unable to muster more than a short, restless half-hour. Macie and her Aide were unfailingly patient, adjusting the thermostat when I was too hot and bringing a blanket when I began to shiver. All that, plus accompanying me on several trips to the bathroom. At four am, when sleep had escaped me entirely between two vitals checks, I confessed that when this happened at home, I wrapped a long stocking around my head, covering my eyes. Macie thought a minute, then left, I assumed to continue her rounds. She returned a moment later, however, with a strip of soft, stretchy material which I took and wrapped comfortably around my head. It worked, almost immediately, and I slept soundly from four am until seven! In addition to addressing her responsibilities with patience, kindness, and efficiency, Macie went the thoughtful and creative, Extra Mile, for a struggling and appreciative patient.
