Mackenzie David, BSN, RN
We had a patient having back surgery, and the day before surgery, the patient stated that he might have to cancel his surgery because he is his wife's primary caregiver and his children were not able to make it in time for the 7 am surgery to sit with her at the hospital during the procedure.
Mackenzie came to the manager, offering to bring her laptop and work from the hospital waiting room at 7 am to sit with the patient's wife so he would feel comfortable having someone there.
Mackenzie also found out through speaking with the patient that he was lifting his wife regularly, she went over post op limitations where she then found out that he did not have any scheduled help for this wife during his recovery.
Mackenzie then, went through all of the appropriate HIPAA steps to be able to request home health for the patient, but also went above and beyond to connect with the patients wife's PCP to work to also get home health ordered for her during his recovery!
Because of her dedication to this patient and his family, he was able to have surgery, and both he and his wife received the care needed during his recovery at home.
