Mackenzie Mobley, RN
I came to the ER after an outpatient chest X-ray showed a large pneumothorax. Even though I knew from my PCP that a chest tube would be placed, and despite being a nurse myself, I was still very anxious about it. It also didn't feel real, as I had worked almost all day with the collapsed lung. I ended up waiting for quite a while after getting a new X-ray, which contributed to it not feeling real.
When I got pulled back to a room, I went to do my urine sample and came out of the bathroom to multiple people, including the physician, as well as a chest tube kit ready to go. Panic started to set in at that point as I realized that I was the critical ER patient instead of the one sending the patients to the ER or treating them.
Mackenzie was the charge nurse on shift in the ED. She came in to help get everything set up, and then, as the only female, her job was to sterilely hold my breast out of the way while the doc placed the chest tube. As she did so, she clearly explained everything that was happening to me. She talked to me like an actual human being, which can often be missed in urgent situations.
She also took care when dressing the chest tube to ensure that tape/gauze/tubing were affixed in a way that would irritate my skin as little as possible. She also took a picture of the chest tube set up (after making sure I wouldn't be exposed in said picture), and explained the set up to me based on the picture too.
Afterward, I was still feeling really anxious, and she advocated for me to get another dose of anxiety medication. While this experience as a whole was still traumatic, the nurses I had at Mercy made it the best experience it could possibly be. Mackenzie particularly helped me feel safe and like a person during what was an overall traumatic experience.
Not only did she go above and beyond while caring for me, but she also did it while not even being my assigned nurse and while running a busy ER. If anyone exemplifies the qualities a nurse should have or deserves a DAISY, it is Mackenzie.
