It is people like Maddie who truly make the world a better place. She was completely comfortable leading us in prayer, and she will forever be remembered as an angel among us that day.
We went through what no parent should ever have to experience: waking up to find our 27-year-old special needs son unresponsive.
After he was rushed to the Emergency Department by ambulance, we witnessed a flurry of activity as the ER nurses and doctors did everything they could to save his life. He was unable to be revived, and we lost our only son—a bright light in our world who taught us more about life despite being non-verbal and unable to walk.
Throughout all of the activity, there was one nurse, Maddie Jehn, who approached our family and truly cared not only for our son, but for what we were going through. She was so helpful throughout the entire ordeal. She truly was our angel that day.
What stood out the most came at the end. Our son had been cleaned up, and we were all saying our goodbyes to him. Leaving your only son in an ER room was absolutely the hardest thing we have ever had to do. How do you just leave someone you love?
Sensing our pain, Maddie asked if she could pray with us over our son. That truly was the defining moment of our entire time in the ER. She became the hands and feet of Christ to our family by offering to pray over him and with us. It is a moment we will never forget.
Maddie even came to our son's visitation the following week. Another meaningful detail is that she wasn't even scheduled to work the morning he came to the ER—she had picked up an additional shift.

We are also grateful for the priest who was called to the ER to administer last rites for our son. We know he is celebrating this day in paradise.
Maddie is the kind of employee who knows her job and does it well. But she also went above and beyond. She is truly deserving of this award, as she showed extraordinary care and compassion for my son and for all of us in the room that morning.

We received one of the scariest phone calls of our lives from our mom and immediately made our way to the hospital. Maddie recognized my brother's name when we arrived and was there for our family on the worst day of our lives.
My parents were already in the ER, so when my sister and I arrived, Maddie was waiting by the door with the chaplain to greet us. Not yet knowing what we were walking into, it was so comforting to see a familiar face.
Once we received the news that my brother had passed before we arrived, Maddie checked on us multiple times, even though I know she was busy caring for other patients. Her kindness on such a horrible day was a bright light in the darkness.
In addition to being there on the day of his death, Maddie attended his visitation the following weekend, even though she also had to work.
We are forever grateful for Maddie's presence on those days and will remember her actions forever.
