Madeleine Merrell, ADN, RN

I am honored to nominate Madeleine Merrell for her extraordinary skill, compassion, and deep respect for both patients and families during end‑of‑life care. As my mother approached the end of her life, Madeleine provided care with grace, dignity, and profound humanity. When her shift began, the plan of care was full treatment—dialysis, removing excess fluid, and eventually placement of a pacemaker.

Over the course of the day, our family’s reality changed completely. Madeleine walked with us through that transition, as the focus shifted from aggressive intervention to honoring my mother’s wishes and moving to comfort measures. She supported our family as we wrestled with this decision, offering steady presence, patience, and compassion as we went from planning life‑prolonging treatments to saying goodbye together. She handled this transition with remarkable grace, never rushing us and never losing sight of the incredible human being my mother was. Madeleine ensured my mom’s comfort while attentively caring for our family—bringing drinks, chapstick, ice chips, and even honoring my mother’s final request for a Sprite Zero. Every action reflected thoughtfulness, anticipation of needs, and genuine concern.

As a nurse myself, I witnessed something truly special in Madeleine’s care. She navigated the immense responsibility and emotional difficulty of walking a patient to the end of life with exceptional skill and tenderness. She spoke to my mother, treated her with reverence, and preserved her dignity in every moment. One of the greatest gifts Madeleine gave me was letting me be part of my mother’s final care. Being able to help care for my mom one last time was profoundly meaningful and healing. Madeleine supported and guided me through this process with grace and respect, honoring both my professional role as a nurse and my role as a grieving daughter.

Madeleine embodies nursing at its very best—clinical excellence paired with deep compassion and humanity. Thank you, Madeleine, for everything—for walking with us through impossible decisions, for the love and dignity you gave my mother, and for the kindness and respect you showed our family in our most vulnerable moments. It is a tender mercy that will never be forgotten.
