She understood right away that we were facing our toughest challenge as new parents and let us know she was going to be there with us every step of the way.
My daughter, K, was admitted to CHOP arriving via ambulance from Virtua hospital after it was determined that she needed a higher level of care (severe case of RSV). At just 8 months old, my wife K and I were extremely concerned with her condition as her rapid breathing continued to persist. In the ICU we met our nurse Madeline McSweeney (known to us as "Maddie") for the first time. One of the things that Maddie did to make an impression on us was show an ability to be very attentive while also bringing a calming presence to the bedside. She understood right away that we were facing our toughest challenge as new parents and let us know she was going to be there with us every step of the way.

Maddie was also exemplary in the nursing care she provided to our daughter. She paid attention to all the small details that meant everything to us as parents. From helping to get K's breathing mask to fit more comfortably, to making sure she did not get too tangled in all the wires she was connected to--Maddie did it all with compassion and a smile on her face. She took the time to listen to our concerns and answer questions that we had. Even though we knew she had other patients to care for, we always felt that she was right there, available when we needed her.

Our daughter ended up being in the ICU for 8 days, throughout that period Maddie was assigned as our nurse many times. She consistently brought the same work ethic each and every time and continued to help us remain optimistic when her shift began. Being in the ICU with our young daughter was one of the scariest times of our lives. Very thankful we had the great care, support, and kindness that Maddie offered to my family and me so effortlessly. It is because of her outstanding work that my wife and I believe Maddie is a DAISY Nurse, recognizing her outstanding display of nursing excellence and unique ability to connect with people during the most difficult of times.
