I am a 100% disabled vet who’s had nine prior surgeries, five of which were on my lumbar. I had my third spinal fusion in June 2021. I thought I knew what to expect post-op. But my last fusion, I was 24 years old and in military shape. About an hour after I woke up, the pain started. Pain is like an "old friend" to me. But this was like nothing I’ve experienced. I was crying and screaming in agony. My wife and I were terrified. I could tell Madeline was doing everything she could to no avail. My wife said my pain was spiking every 35 minutes like clockwork. It was an intense situation and I know men in the military who would’ve collapsed under the pressure. She was there the entire time. Comforting us, keeping us calm, and between pain spikes getting to know my wife and me. She is the definition of what a nurse should be. When her shift ended, I had felt panicked. But she said, “I will be back tonight.” I immediately felt comforted. A pain Doc put me on a medication regimen that I had to take every two hours. The night of her second shift with me was the first sleep I got since I got checked into the hospital. She flawlessly got me to take my meds without waking me up. She was my angel in that hospital.
