Some nurses go above and beyond the call of duty to make their patients feel welcome and cared for. This is the case of the RN, Magelio. We arrived to critical care after spending the day with our 83yr old mother and we were in anguish over her medical condition. Magelio's words were very comforting and made a difficult situation tolerable just by showing compassion and kindness. He came into the room every two hours to check in on my mother by turning her, taking care that she did not get any bed sores, and cleaning her when she used the bedpan. He showed great respect and appreciation towards his co-worker that helped him in the task. His voice and mannerisms were always respectful, his voice was kind and soothing. He made my mother feel welcome and cared for. My mother doesn't usually like to talk or laugh in these type of situations, but he was so much like a friend to her that he made her laugh, talk, and even joke. To her he wasn't just a nurse, he was a friend. He would talk to everyone in the family, making them all feel reassured that she would be okay. My mother is not the type of person that usually goes out of her way to compliment. When she does, it means a lot on your behalf, and she gave him many compliments! To him it is not only his job, but his passion. Not just something he does to pay his bills, but something he wants to do.
