Maggie was the nurse who was there for the family all night, and she made sure to be there for them instead of switching out nurses right before the patient passed away.
In the short time I've been in the PICU, I have seen many instances where Maggie has shown what a compassionate and devoted nurse she is. I'm sure there are a million examples, but here are a few that I've seen and appreciated.
Even though she was not my preceptor, she offered her time to help me learn and complete skills in my orientation packet. She answered all my questions without judgment and was very encouraging. Not everyone likes to orient new staff, and it’s nice to have a warm welcome.
Recently, one night, Maggie was off at 1:30, but we had a trauma/code event that came in right around midnight. She did not hesitate to jump in and assist with the code, even though it meant she had to stay late. The situation lasted a few hours, and she was a calming presence that was needed during the situation. I remember how calm and organized she seemed during the whole event. There were a couple of us new nurses who were "runners" and would go grab things throughout the entire event, which can be hectic. When we were unsure of some items we were asked to grab, she never lost her patience with us and would just direct us to the right items. She is a great role model for new PICU nurses.
Another instance that emphasizes her devotion to this career is when she had a patient who was expected to pass away around shift change, so she stayed late to help the patient and family with this sudden transition. Maggie was the nurse who was there for the family all night, and she made sure to be there for them instead of switching out nurses right before the patient passed away. This may seem like a small act. However, to be a familiar face for the family as they grieved and processed their loss shows how much integrity and compassion Maggie has.
Maggie, I am honored to work with you, learn from you, and watch you grow as a nurse.
