After doing some research, I found that Maggie cared for O on only one shift, yet caused such an impact in his and J’s life.
J visited the unit, asking to see nurse Maggie. J explained that her husband was a patient here previously and she wanted to personally thank Maggie for the care Maggie provided at the time. I escorted J to find Maggie coming out of a patient’s room. J approached Maggie and said:
“Hi Maggie, I am J. You probably don’t remember me, but my husband O was here on this unit and you took care of him. I remember you took the time to talk to him about Mexican food and told him about your uncle’s restaurant in Homestead. I want to let you know that he was not able to make it to visit your uncle’s restaurant, as he passed away a couple of months after being discharged, but he never stopped talking about you when we went home. I will never forget that on his worst day, he told me that he no longer had hope after being diagnosed with liver cancer, and he had lost his faith in believing in God. As an answered prayer, you came in that day, sat down to talk to him, prayed with him, and he was never the same person again. O was filled with hope after that day and became intentional with enjoying every day of life that he was gifted. When he went home, he called all his friends and family, spent time with them, and we enjoyed every moment we got to spend together. I came to see you today because his dying wish was for me to return and thank you. I don’t have much to offer you in return, but I owed it to him to come and give you a hug and just say ‘thank you’ on his behalf.”
Our eyes were filled with tears to hear this story and to witness the impact that one caring moment can cause. After doing some research, I found that Maggie cared for O on only one shift, yet caused such an impact in his and J’s life. This is only one example of the kind of nurse Maggie is. Maggie is intentional, detailed, and beyond caring and compassionate. Maggie takes the time to connect with people, listen to their stories, and add on to it by leaving a memory with them that they will never forget. Maggie is a prime example of an extraordinary nurse that goes above and beyond to make an enormous difference in the lives of people
