Mai C. Xiong facilitated communication among a patient, the physicians, and the interpreter. She also helped by explaining test results, arranging palliative care, and setting up a Patient Online Services account. 
"Working as a new nurse and receiving this reward is very rewarding," says Xiong. "As a nurse, I always wanted to advocate for my patients, especially for patients who don't speak English. I know how hard it is to not understand what the health care providers are saying. I tried to make sure that the conversation was provided correctly and that there were no misunderstandings. I am so blessed to touch the lives of so many patients and provide them with health care services. It's gratifying to be appreciated by those I care for, and I appreciate the teamwork of my Medical-Surgical Department every day."
