A mother of four children with the 4th child born that same day went into DIC (Disseminated intravascular coagulation) with prognosis between 10-50%. The patient arrived emergently in the OR suite before any supplies had been brought into the room and opened. An emergent page for any available OR staff was announced over the intercom and an abundance of OR Nurses and Techs vacated the lunchroom to respond.
The entire team worked collaboratively to get the supplies into the room, the patient prepped, blood & blood products checked and administered and readily available as needed; ordering additional product throughout the three hour procedure in a tension packed situation, sometimes patients die. There was calm professional communication.
A Nurse called for cell saver tech immediately after the patient arrived in the OR. Three scrub techs initially scrubbed in so one could count, one could assist with the abdominal procedure and one was available for perineal procedure if needed, retract keep up with three surgeons at the field.
The staff worked seamlessly to provide expedient quality care. They spoke reassuringly to the patient and calmly to each other regarding what was needed and directed each other on what needed to be done next. The patient was stabilized and the internal bleeding was stopped. The patient survived.
