When I started to panic, Makayla held my hand, reassured me, and walked me through everything to expect as they were urgently prepping me for surgery. She continued to hold my hand in the OR until my husband could join me.
Makayla was my labor and delivery nurse for the birth of my daughter. Makayla was so kind and the most amazing advocate for me. After being induced for high blood pressure, my labor definitely wasn’t going as planned. I was in labor for 36 hours and still had quite a way to go. Makayla helped reposition me every 20 minutes all night long and did everything she could to help get the baby ready and in position for delivery. Every fear I had about labor and being a new mom, Makayla listened, validated my feelings, and reassured me that she was there to help me get through it. She checked on my family in the waiting room and even shared her snacks with our nieces. After being in labor for so long, I began to develop an infection that Makayla caught instantly when my baby’s heart rate started to increase and started showing signs of distress, and I started spiking and fever. She kept close contact with my OB all night, and I ended up needing an urgent C-section. When I started to panic, Makayla held my hand, reassured me, and walked me through everything to expect as they were urgently prepping me for surgery. She continued to hold my hand in the OR until my husband could join me. My husband and I struggled with infertility and recurrent miscarriages for four years, so this baby was truly a miracle. Makayla’s wonderful care kept us safe and allowed us to bring our baby girl, whom we fought so hard for, into the world. I will eternally be grateful for Makayla, whenever I tell people my birth story I always love telling them about how wonderful she was and show them a picture of us in the operating room after our daughter was born. Even though she was wearing a mask, you can tell Makayla is smiling and beaming with joy for us, and it will forever be one of my favorite pictures. The way she cared for me and kept us safe, it is obvious Labor and delivery nursing is her calling and having her as our nurse was such a blessing. It is because of her that we were able to leave as a new family of three.
