Makayla saw how nervous I was, and she reassured me that I wasn't alone and that she had my back.
Makayla was so kind and such a great help to me on the night shift. My regular floor is Laurel Oaks, but I was sent to work the ED that night. I was super nervous about going because I've never worked the ED-EVER. I'd heard that it was busy but that's an understatement. I didn't know where anything was located, and had no experience with drawing labs on 5 patients. However, it was Makayla who came to the rescue. If she didn't tell me where things were, she got them for me (if I was busy). I didn't realize that there was no nursing tech, so basically, we were doing primary care. Makayla saw how nervous I was, and she reassured me that I wasn't alone and that she had my back. I had one patient who'd had a major accident in his room, and I had to take him down the hall to be showered. The shower took a while because he kept getting sick and had to keep showering. Makayla stepped in and cared for my patients, gave meds for me, and drew labs for a patient for me while I was dealing with the one patient. Before being reassigned to a different zone after 1am, she made sure that I had an IV bag of meds mixed (it was one we don't mix on the med-surg floor). Then, she assured me that she was still there for me and told me that if I needed her to let her know.
The entire ED team was awesome, but Makayla really went above and beyond to allay my fears and make the shift "doable." During the night, I felt as if I was on the verge of drowning, but Makayla (and the other team members) helped me keep my head afloat. For all of the above, I feel that Makayla exemplifies extraordinary leadership (she took it upon herself to make sure that I was as successful as I could be on her floor), compassion (she let me know that she was there for me), and skills (she was very organized and knowledgeable) that are the hallmarks of a DAISY Nurse. I wish Makayla continued success in all her endeavors at Prisma Health, and I just want to say Thank You, Makayla, for all you do.
