During a time when we were physically exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, and learning how to be parents, Kenna was our angel.
We were admitted to the hospital for labor, and our baby was delivered in the early morning of the following day. Like most first-time parents, we were exhausted, overwhelmed, emotional, and stepping into completely unfamiliar territory. After delivery, we were transferred to the postpartum unit, where we stayed for three days and were cared for by several nurses.
While we are grateful to everyone, one nurse stands out in a way we will truly never forget, MaKenna. MaKenna cared for us during the night shifts and over multiple days, and her presence alone brought us comfort. Those nights were especially difficult: we had very little sleep, were learning how to feed our baby for the first time, figuring out diaper changes, soothing a newborn, and navigating the physical and emotional recovery after childbirth. Everything felt heavy and overwhelming. Through it all, Kenna was there - calm, gentle, attentive, and endlessly kind. She consistently offered help in every way imaginable, never making us feel like a burden. She checked on us frequently, not just clinically, but emotionally, asking how we were feeling and what we needed.
One of the most meaningful things she did was to offer to take our baby to the nursery during the night so we could rest. She fed him, changed his diaper, and gently put him to sleep, giving us precious moments of recovery when we desperately needed them. Kenna’s energy never wavered. Even during the late hours of the night, she was positive, patient, and fully present. Her passion for serving people is something I have honestly never seen before. She treated us with such care, calmness, and gentleness that it felt less like a nurse caring for patients and more like a loving family member.
On an emotional level, I truly wish I had someone like Kenna in my life, in my family, among my loved ones, and in my everyday world. That is how deeply she impacted us. I run a medical clinic in another country and have been in healthcare for over 30 years. In all that time, I can honestly say I have never encountered someone like Kenna. Such compassion, patience, and a pure heart are incredibly rare in any profession, especially healthcare. During a time when we were physically exhausted, emotionally overwhelmed, and learning how to be parents, Kenna was our angel. Her care made an unforgettable difference in our postpartum experience, and we will always remember her for the rest of our lives. She went far beyond the normal call of duty, and she truly embodies everything the DAISY Award represents.
