During this most difficult time of my life, Mala stepped in not only as an educator but as a guiding light. She provided unwavering support that went far beyond the classroom.
It is with great admiration and heartfelt gratitude that I nominate Mala Reich for the DAISY Nurse Educator Award. As a former TIP fellow, I have had the honor of experiencing firsthand the extraordinary compassion, dedication, and support that she brings to St. John’s Education Department.

Unfortunately, while in the program, I was diagnosed with cancer. cWhether it was through kind words, flexibility, mentorship, or simply being present when I needed someone to talk to, her actions have left a lasting impact on my life, both personally and professionally.

Her structured and thoughtful calendar schedule for TIP nurses became a lifeline for me. I took that calendar with me EVERYWHERE, even to the restrooms. Because of her careful planning and attention to detail, I was able to attend all of my doctor’s appointments without falling behind. I was able to continue to work until the day before my surgery and treatments. Her support gave me the strength to continue moving forward during a time when I felt overwhelmed and uncertain. In addition, she took the time to check in on me, offer extra help, and make sure I never felt alone. That gesture made a lasting difference.

Recently, I had my two-year check-up, a milestone that meant everything to me. And the first person I wanted to share that with was her. That’s the kind of presence she has had in my life. Even after I left the department, she never stopped reminding me of what I’ve overcome, accomplished, and how far I had come. Her impact on my life is immeasurable. Her “hugs” and ongoing encouragement continue to support and inspire me.

Mala is more than an educator—she is a true role model in nursing. She leads by example, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and integrity in every interaction. She takes the time to help each nurse individually, recognizing our unique needs and helping us grow into compassionate and competent nurses.

I wholeheartedly recommend Mala for this recognition, as she exemplifies what it means to be an educator and role model in the nursing profession. I can think of no one more deserving of recognition than Mala. She embodies the very best of what education should be—compassionate, empowering, and truly life-changing.
