The care, compassion, and grace that Maleah demonstrated to this patient and family were beyond what I could comprehend, especially with what the family had already endured.
Clinical Skills:
Maleah exhibited competent clinical skills while caring for a patient whose unborn fetus suffered demise during the patient’s hospitalization. The patient required continued cardiac monitoring after a medical emergency that occurred when she realized her fetus was not going to survive. Days later, Maleah effectively monitored vitals, cardiac rhythm, and accompanied the patient off the unit to attend a ceremony that took place outdoors per the family's request. Maleah took the patient and her husband to the ceremony to ensure the patient would be safe for the duration while the patient was off the monitor.
Compassionate Care:
D5 is not a unit where we normally (or ever) are tasked with caring for families who have suffered an acute fetal demise. The care, compassion, and grace that Maleah demonstrated to this patient and family were beyond what I could comprehend, especially with what the family had already endured. She spent quality time, actively listened, and showed the utmost respect for their wishes. Maleah did all she could to allow them time to grieve and communicate their concerns. She went so far as to gift them a plant so they could complete a memorial at home.
Exemplary Service:
Not only in this situation, but Maleah consistently shows exemplary service to all her patients. The ceremony for this patient and family was at 0930, right during our first medication pass, vitals, assessments, and documentation. Maleah learned about the timing during the report, but this did not dissuade her from being willing to attend the service. She also was able to take photos and video during this valued time, per the patient’s request.
Continued Commitment:
Caring for this patient and family was not a normal day-to-day task for an adult health nurse. The psychological and emotional strain it took on the staff caring for this patient was recognized. Maleah excelled in the care of this patient and continues this practice each week I see her. Maleah will insist on keeping those non-compliant, unhappy patients to retain continuity and so that other staff members do not need to bear that burden. I am blessed to be able to work alongside Maleah and appreciate knowing that there are truly compassionate, caring people in this world still.
