Mallissa Garcia RN has been a vital member of RBG-ASC. Today she demonstrated in a nutshell what she means to this unit. She is capable and proficient in all areas of our surgery center including GI lab, Pre-op, Post-op, and PACU. She started out this morning coming in early and starting in pre-op due to our large number of patients on Friday. Then she went to GI lab for the morning and delayed her lunch until an RN came back from her appointment. After lunch, she worked in pre-op and realized on her own that post-op area needed some assistance and floated there without being asked (or begged). She never says "No" to any duty that is asked of her which is why she is our Infection Control chairman, Charge Nurse, Urine HCG and SCIP auditor. She always is the one to volunteer when we have early OR start cases and stays late as a Charge Nurse when needed. Her instructions to patients and families are thorough, standardized, and empathetic. She rarely takes PTO because she feels loyal to the unit and its needs due to short amount of staff (even though she will lose PTO due to her 600+ hours). She inspires her coworkers to exercise (after work in the empty unit), eat right (sending out healthy recipes and having a weight loss contest), and to socialize. She is truly a leader and good friend to many of us. This unit would not be the same without her leadership and inspiration. Thank you, Missy, for always saying "yes" and doing what needs to be done with a great attitude, smile and heart of gold.
