During a code situation on the unit, Malorie demonstrated excellence and compassion to all involved making this difficult situation run as smoothly as possible.
On the day in question, Malorie was charge nurse on the floor. I was waiting for a direct admission to what we all thought should have been a stable patient admitted for dehydration. Upon arrival to the floor, this patient was extremely unstable, critical in fact. Malorie was at the bedside immediately and initiated calling a code. She even called required staff to the bedside to assist following a delay in overhead communication. Malorie clearly voiced her role as documenter during the code, holding this role very calmly and professionally.
Following the code, Malorie fronted a debriefing for all staff involved, allowing us time to reflect on the situation, praise for our successes and discuss what we felt could have gone better.
This was my first situation where one of my patients coded. I felt very nervous and stressed. But having Malorie as my charge nurse made this situation less scary. Malorie is an excellent advocate for both patients, families, and staff. She exemplifies the meaning of an "extraordinary nurse". She is a role model and I strive to exhibit the level of skills, compassion and caring that Malorie brings to work every single day.
