Mamye still maintains her old-school ways of nursing and looks at the patients as a whole, not just task to task. This mindset often allows Mamye to catch things missed by other nurses.
Mamye exemplifies an excellent nurse in every way. She has years of experience, and she always shares her wealth of knowledge with the staff. She is constantly precepting new nurses and even those who are not under her supervision, she is watching over them. As we all know there is the old school way of nursing and the new school way. I am so thankful that Mamye still maintains her old-school ways of nursing and looks at the patients as a whole, not just task to task. This mindset often allows Mamye to catch things missed by other nurses.
Mamye also passes on her skills and thought processes to others including new nurses, experienced nurses, travelers, and even resource teammates. There have been countless emergency situations on the unit that Mamye has responded to, or patients declining, and staff is constantly stating “Thank goodness Mamye was there,” “Mamye helped me so much, I don’t know what I would have done without her.”
Recently there was a patient with concern for domestic violence and Mamye brought it to leadership's attention and made a terrific suggestion to give the significant other a meal ticket to get him out of the room so that staff could talk with the patient. We were able to use Mamye’s suggestion, confirm the domestic violence, and develop a safety plan for the patient. Mamye is always problem-solving and intervening to ensure that patients are cared for.
Mamye strives for excellent patient care and she consistently receives compliments from patients and staff. There was recently a teammate with maintenance who was at work and not feeling well; he sought out Mamye to check him out and she took his vitals, assessed him, and took him to the ED for further treatment. The teammate shared with me, "I knew that if I could just make it up to Mamye that I would be fine, she would fix me up." This story illustrated to me how respected and valued Mamye is not just to our unit but the entire hospital staff. Mamye is always staying late to help others and ensuring patients' needs are met. She will care for patients' every need even as small as a secondary garbage can for a patient who needs one bedside. Mamye works so hard and does such an excellent job.
