Mandy always strives to put the care of the Veteran first. She helps with nursing shortages to make sure patients are cared for. I was working telephone triage when we had a Veteran who was traveling and fell and was going to need surgery on his back. The daughter, not knowing about our travel Veteran program, had paid out of pocket for initial x-rays as well as initial evaluation (over $5K). Mandy worked with the patient and his family, along with the Travel Veteran Coordinator in South Carolina and Care in the Community here at Salem to get the Veteran the care he needed at South Carolina versus coming back to the Salem. The Veteran was >80 years old, living alone with his needed support system in South Carolina. This way, when the Veteran is discharged from the hospital, he doesn't have to go to a nursing home, he can be in a loving home with his family. This is just one instance where Mandy takes care of the Veterans with what is best for them. She thinks that this is the norm when she goes above and beyond with every patient.
