I am nominating Nurse Manuel Porquincula as a deserving recipient for the DAISY Award. When I arrived on the 5th floor it was the middle of the night. In the morning a nurse came in very politely introduced himself as Manuel and said that he will be my nurse for the day. Sometime during the day I fell asleep, woke up with the chill and a tremendous amount of pain, I was in tears, I told him that I was going to die and leave my children. He compassionately got me to calm down and he gave me something for pain. He assured me that good positive mental attitude is the key. That in order for them to help me I had to remain calm and be positive at all times.
I told Manuel that I felt awkward to keep buzzing for pain medicine; he replied, “Our job is to keep you comfortable and to evaluate your problem.” When I told Manuel I did not want to bother him, he replied, that it is not a bother “I am doing my job”. He came in frequently, checked on me and helped. Manuel is polite, compassionate, understanding, helpful and kind; I am glad that I met Manuel.
