DAISY Awards are designed to salute compassionate nurses who go beyond the call of duty to care for their patients. However, a few months ago, I was reminded that employees can also experience health challenges. One night, while working my shift, I was suddenly struck with nausea and a severe headache. I only had a few hours left on my shift, I decided to tough it out, I gave my charge, Marcela Perez, a heads up about my condition. I simply shared the information with Marcela as a precaution. I was still committed to providing excellent patient care and being vigilant against medical error. However, what happened next left me speechless.
Without hesitation, Marcela began to handle my blood and platelet transfusions for my patients. She showed genuine concern about my health and never once complained about helping me out. I have been registered nurse for 37 years and I can honestly say I was truly amazed by Marcela's work ethic and professional courtesy. LBJ often prides itself on its family-like atmosphere and that day I was truly touched by the effortless compassion Marcela displayed for a co-worker in need. Marcela is not only a nurse who is committed to excellent patient outcome, she is also a nurse who embraces the concept of servant leadership. Her patience and positivity will remain with me throughout my nursing career.
