Marcelo’s nursing journey is a testament to a lifetime devoted to service, excellence, and the growth of others.

He began his career in 1999 as a private duty nurse in the Philippines and then as a nurse in the private sector. After gaining ample experience, he decided to relocate to Saudi Arabia and worked in the General Ward in SGH Jeddah for about 6 years. He then got transferred to the ICU, where he worked initially as a clinical nurse for a year, then as a charge nurse, and eventually as a nurse manager.

There, his potential in teaching further developed, from which he was recruited to conduct the pre-residency surgical program for licensed physicians. Marcelo also demonstrated unwavering dedication, clinical expertise, and deep compassion for patients and families during their most critical moments. In an environment that demands strength, precision, and emotional resilience, he consistently stood as a calming presence, earning trust through skill, integrity, and genuine humanity.

In 2018, Marcelo commissioned the opening of SGH branches in Dammam and Hail, Saudi Arabia.

As Marcelo’s career evolved, he transitioned into the role of nurse educator, where his impact multiplied far beyond individual patient encounters. He became a guiding force for countless nurses, translating real-world ICU experience into meaningful learning. In addition to being a nurse educator, he was also a nurse planner, a clinical coordinator, an insurance liaison officer of the Arabian American Oil Company (Saudi Aramco), and a training coordinator for nursing interns.

Marcelo’s teaching was marked by patience, clarity, and an unshakable belief in the potential of every nurse he mentored. He did not simply teach procedures or policies; he shaped values, critical thinking, and a deep respect for patient-centered care.

His legacy continued to grow through his role as a co-mentor of the hospital’s Nursing Shared Governance Professional Development Council, where he selflessly invested his time, wisdom, and encouragement in developing future nursing leaders.

In 2023, Marcelo earned his master’s degree in business administration in healthcare from the University of Immaculate Conception in Davao City, Philippines. In 2025, he became the site coordinator for the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) for SGH Jeddah.

For 27 years of his career, Marcelo has served the nursing profession with humility and purpose, uplifting colleagues, strengthening systems, and inspiring excellence wherever he worked. His influence lives on in the nurses he trained, the leaders he mentored, and the countless patients whose lives were touched indirectly through his guidance.

Marcelo truly exemplifies the very essence of the DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award. His career reflects a rare blend of clinical mastery, educational excellence, and heartfelt mentorship. He has not only dedicated his life to nursing, but he has also elevated the profession itself.
