She calls him regularly and continues to encourage him to do better and take the best care of himself possible. I once heard him on the phone calling her his “angel.”
We have many patients who need and require additional help facilitating their needs before, during, and long after appointments with our providers. Marcie takes each patient on as a personal friend and acts as a caretaker. Her heart is huge. She has the highest moral values and sees only the best in every individual she assists.

Most recently, Marcie worked with a couple who had transportation needs, medication needs, and support needs from beginning to end. She cared for them as if they were family. Marcie would call transport or offer to pay for an Uber or a neighbor of the family to get the couple to their appointments.

Once at the appointments, the care did not stop. She would have them call the clinic when they arrived, and she would travel outside with a wheelchair to assist them inside, always with a smile. Marcie was happy to see them and help them, no matter the time of day or weather; she had to brave the weather to get them inside for their appointments.

She went to extra lengths to help them with medication assistance programs, bundling medications from the pharmacy, making many extra insurance and pharmacy calls, and even providing reminders about the best way to take the prescribed medications. She spent extra time explaining in detail why they should take them as directed and what each medication was needed for. Marcie looks for every possible way to help this couple and, again, is always happy to do it.

Beyond helping this couple through difficult times, including amputations and multiple ED and hospital admissions, Marcie was a light to them both. Just a few months ago, the wife had a setback and unexpectedly passed away. Marcie was heartbroken, as she truly felt this patient was making progress, exercising, eating better, and trying to make lifestyle changes.

She was also compassionate and comforting to the spouse, who was grieving and at a loss for how to adapt to this new life alone. Again, Marcie was there. She worried about him being in such a rural area and so far from care. She calls him regularly and continues to encourage him to do better and take the best care of himself possible. I once heard him on the phone calling her his “angel.”

I know she will continue to help him and so many others as long as she is a nurse in rural Eastern North Carolina. I am so thankful for nurses like Marcie, and we are more than blessed to have her at our clinic. I have no doubt she will continue going out of her way for this patient and so many others she touches each day.

She is truly a beacon of hope for our patients.
