The news was devastating: the baby was born with a genetic defect that would severely limit long-term survival. Marcie Moyer, a labor and delivery nurse, was with the parents in this difficult time.
"Marcie consoled them, listening to their concerns and emotional needs," wrote another nurse. Marcie learned that the father was a musician and arranged with the neonatal intensive care unit for the father to play his stringed instrument for his newborn child. While he was playing, the child passed away in her mother's arms.
"This meant so much to the mother and her husband," wrote the nurse. "This is a beautiful example of caring and healing displayed by Marcie."
