The stroke team and neuro-intervention were in a difficult spot. We had a patient transferring from another hospital that needed to go directly to a CT perfusion scan and then to intervention. However, the rules were preventing this from happening. ED could not accept the patient. The patient had to be wheeled up to ICU, get signed in, then get wheeled back to the CT. The patient had a large vessel occlusion and was actively losing brain, so this delay may have cost her. I tried to work with the ED charge nurse who, following the rules, refused to budge on this issue. I asked her if there were any workarounds and she said that a nurse from ICU would have to be at the door and another person would have to enter the patient into the system. I've always had good interactions with Marcie and went to her for help. She arranged things in the ICU, so she could be waiting in the ED when the patient arrived. We got the patient the immediate therapy she needed and saved her ability to talk. I was unable to tell this patient how much Marcie's adaptability and care for the patient saved her. She came in completely paralyzed on the left side and completely unable to understand or make speech. Because of the prompt care she got, she regained full strength and can speak and understand language. This woman's life was effectively saved by Marcie going above and beyond. While this event stands out, Marie is there every day with the same great attitude and focused on patient care and outcomes. She is an ideal nurse and deserves recognition.
