Marcus Stuart, MSN, RN
There are nurses who provide excellent care, and then there are nurses who change lives. Marcus Stuart is one of those rare nurses whose compassion extends far beyond what is expected, and I cannot think of anyone more deserving of a DAISY Award.
One patient in particular had suffered an anoxic brain injury as a child and functioned with the mentality of a young child. He treasured two stuffed animals, a bunny and a stuffed dog named "Sparky." One day Sparky disappeared. It is believed the stuffed dog was accidentally wrapped in soiled linens and discarded. The patient was absolutely devastated. He cried continuously, repeatedly saying how much he missed Sparky.
To many people, it may have seemed like "just a stuffed animal," but Marcus immediately recognized that to this patient, Sparky represented comfort, security, and emotional stability. Rather than dismissing his feelings, Marcus sat beside him, comforted him, and promised, "When I get off work, I'll get you another stuffed dog."
Marcus remained in the patient's room, charting while watching the patient's favorite cartoons with him until he became calm. He understood that healing is not limited to medications, procedures, and vital signs; it also means caring for a person's emotional well-being with dignity and respect.
After completing a grueling 13-hour shift, Marcus could have gone home to rest. Instead, he drove to Walmart, searched until he found a stuffed dog that reminded him of Sparky, purchased it with his own money, and then drove all the way back to the hospital, even though he was scheduled to return for another shift that same night. He didn't want the patient to spend another day heartbroken.
When Marcus handed the patient his new stuffed dog, the patient's face immediately lit up. The tears stopped, and he smiled with pure joy. In that moment, Marcus restored far more than a missing toy. He restored comfort, trust, happiness, and a sense of security to someone who depended entirely on the compassion of others.
This story is not an isolated act of kindness. It is simply the most recent example of the extraordinary person Marcus is. Despite attending nurse practitioner school full time, completing clinical rotations three days each week, and balancing an incredibly demanding schedule, Marcus consistently volunteers to work overtime so his coworkers are not left short-staffed. He quietly sacrifices his own sleep and personal time because he believes his patients and teammates deserve the best care possible.
I have personally witnessed Marcus pick up a patient from home and drive her to the hospital because she had no transportation after her husband, the person who normally drove her, became hospitalized himself. Marcus has never sought recognition for these acts. In fact, he rarely tells anyone about the countless ways he helps others. He simply sees a need and responds.
He told me he didn't join the military for recognition; he joined to make a difference, and as an Army veteran, he continues to do so.
Marcus will probably never ask for recognition. In fact, he intentionally keeps many of these acts of kindness private. But extraordinary nurses deserve to have their stories told. I challenge anyone to find a nurse more willing to sacrifice his own comfort, sleep, and personal time simply to make another person's life a little better.
