Margaret (Peggy) Daggett is an exceptional Nurse Practitioner whose dedication to our Veterans in the HCHV, STS, and ICMHR programs truly stands out.

Recently, Peggy demonstrated exceptional care when a Veteran, struggling with substance misuse, was facing immediate homelessness. He and his five-year-old son had been staying at various living arrangements for the past six months. At the time of the referral, the family was at a hotel, and check-out was that morning. They had nowhere to go as they had exhausted all their resources and planned to stay in their car. Peggy immediately stepped in, thoroughly assessing the Veteran’s health and substance use needs. She explored every available resource and option, ensuring his needs were addressed quickly and respectfully.

Peggy initiated a treatment regimen to assist him with going through withdrawal, providing both clinical expertise and emotional support while securing safety for both family members. Her swift actions, advocacy, and team collaboration led to both the Veteran and his son being placed in transitional housing that same day, avoiding unsheltered homelessness. Peggy not only managed the current crisis at hand, but she also provided follow-through to ensure the treatment plan was realistic for this unique Veteran's circumstances and a plan he felt well supported in as he navigated this transition. She obtained needed medications, delivered and reviewed the new medication protocol once at transition housing, coordinated a next-day check-in, and scheduled an in-person appointment for the next business day.

This is only one example of many where Peggy's dedication, critical thinking, and heartfelt compassion made a profound difference. Utilizing her communication skills allows for remarkable collaboration with our interdisciplinary teams, which facilitates care that truly exemplifies the spirit of the DAISY Award and the VA’s mission to care for all who have served and their families.

Thank you, Margaret, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
