Margaret is the kind of nurse anyone would want to take care of their loved ones and she is an invaluable member of our team.
I feel compelled to boast about the actions of one of our team members and tell you how very lucky we are to have her on our team. Her name is Margaret Dingess, and she has been with us since her graduation from nursing school in June of 2019. She is pleasant, reliable, engaged, and takes on the responsibility with enthusiasm. Margaret is a terrific nurse: I am proud and humbled by the gift that she is to our patients and our department.
A patient was picked up to be taken to Detroit for psychiatric treatment. The patient left here around 6:00npm. When they arrived at the facility, the admitting nurse noticed that the petition and cert were not with the patient. Our secretary was new and did not realize those papers had to go with the patient. The nurse from Detroit called our nurse, D, to let him know they were sending the patient back to us. Margaret was in charge and asked Detroit's RN if they would keep the patient until she could bring the proper paperwork to them. They said they would keep the patient if we could deliver the papers before 8:00 pm.
So Margaret googled directions to the hospital after she got off work after 7:00 pm and headed to the east side of Detroit to deliver the papers. She got into the parking lot, past the security service, and parked near the ED where she had to go through a security screen and a metal detector. One of the guards called up to the floor to let them know Margaret had arrived and five minutes later the nurse came down to retrieve the papers. Next came the drive home where it rained so heavy she had to drive very slowly the whole way with her hazard lights on and her wipers on maximum where they still could not keep up with the driving rain.
This selfless act saved the Detroit location from having to deny acceptance of the patient, saved that psychiatric patient the pain of returning, saved the transport team from having to return the patient, saved the secretary who learned an important lesson, saved the nurses from having to readmit the patient, and saved D from having to figure out what possible alternatives they had.
