I work in the Patient Financial Office and am nominating Margaret Lewis for the DAISY Award as I have observed how she often goes the extra mile to help her patients with financial barriers. She is unique in that she will come to this office herself to ask for ideas on how to help patients financially, will request that a Benefits Advocate contact one of her patients, and/or will bring patients directly to this office when needed. Today, she had a patient needing surgery who kept putting off the surgery due to financial concerns. The patient was being referred to an outside specialist who required a substantial payment upfront that the patient could not afford. Nurse Lewis asked for options for this patient, and after collaborating, she was able to get the patient referred to a SAMG surgeon. She then walked the patient over to the PFO to have me assist with applying for financial programs. Nurse Lewis always takes the extra steps needed to address any barriers to care for her patients, including assisting with financial issues. This patient was so grateful and expressed to me how the ER staff displayed sincere compassion and care for her. I have witnessed nurse Lewis take these extra steps to help her patients on numerous occasions. Addressing financial issues allows the patient to concentrate on healing and recovery. I am grateful to work with a colleague who demonstrates excellent care and inspires me to do so as well.
