Margaret immediately engaged my husband in the decision-making process, so he felt he had control of an anticipated painful process.
I had been around healthcare for 5 decades. I am a retired RN, and in all of my positions, I have worked with compassionate, committed RNs whom I hoped would receive the 'Healer's Touch' Award. Over the past 6 months, my husband has had multiple procedures. He was admitted for surgery. I do want to say that every person we encountered from admission to discharge was super. The Advent Hospital team should take pride in that fact.

After weeks of anticipation and a few sleepless nights, the procedure was complete. There were lots of milestones to accomplish in a little more than 24hrs to get home and assume self-care. When we arrived, the nurse and PCT introduced themselves and assessed the most comfortable way to transfer my husband to his bed. Margaret immediately engaged my husband in the decision-making process, so he felt he had control of an anticipated painful process. And guess what... he was comfortably in his bed in no time. Margaret next went through a thorough meet and greet process to provide us with information from "soup to nuts." I have to say it was one of the most thorough, and easy-to-digest admissions I have witnessed. She made my husband smile, laugh, and she engaged in small chat too. I am certain she had a full plate with her assignment, but in those two days, she always took those extra moments to fully engage with my husband.

Margaret eased my husband into the reality of viewing his surgical site, drain, and foley catheter, all of which are a big deal to a patient. She even let him know she would be his nurse the following day. Little things like that are key to helping the patient feel secure. To be discharged home, with an indwelling foley catheter, is a major transition for the patient. Margaret listened to his concerns and questions and went that extra mile to make sure my husband had what he needed to be successful at home. I consider Margaret to have the essence of a great nurse. She exhibits knowledge, engagement, calmness, compassion, caring, and a solid emotional IQ because of her bedside manner. I, as a wife, had confidence that my husband was in the best of care with a seasoned team of providers. Please express my gratitude to Margaret, I am certain she will continue to contribute much to nursing and health care.
