Margaret Shipley, RN
I am honored to nominate Margaret " Peggy" Shipley for the DAISY Award because over the past 25+ years of dedicated service at Kaiser Permanente, she consistently exemplifies the heart of nursing—compassion, advocacy, accountability, and unwavering commitment to patients and families. Peggy's practice extends far beyond clinical tasks and reflects her deep sense of responsibility to ensure patients feel safe, supported, and truly cared for. Her commitment to our patients and team is evident in everything she does.
One powerful example is the care she provides to a patient who visits our clinic every other day for IV fluids due to severe dumping syndrome. Each visit lasts nearly two hours, yet Peggy never treats this time as routine. The room is prepared intentionally in advance, supplies are gathered, and the environment is adjusted to create a calm and welcoming space. These thoughtful actions demonstrate not only clinical excellence, but a deep respect for the patient’s comfort, dignity, and emotional well-being.
This commitment continues even outside scheduled visits. If the patient does not arrive as expected, Peggy immediately reaches out—not out of obligation, but out of genuine concern. This simple act reassures the patient that they are seen, remembered, and valued, fostering trust and emotional security during a challenging course of treatment.
Peggy also demonstrates extraordinary advocacy when care coordination breaks down. In one distressing situation, a patient was discharged from a skilled nursing facility without receiving the essential supplies and home treatments that had been ordered. As a result, the patient fell at home, leaving both the patient and a family member frightened and upset with the discharge process. Peggy stepped in immediately, spending many hours coordinating with Utilization Management, the skilled nursing facility, and the primary care provider to correct the gaps in care. Through persistence, clear communication, and empathy, Peggy ensured the patient received appropriate support and helped restore the family’s trust during a highly emotional time.
As the Lead RN, Peggy also exemplifies leadership by providing immediate service recovery. When a member raised concerns about an interaction with a laboratory technician, the nurse took full ownership of the issue. Rather than stopping at an apology, Peggy collaborated with the lab department to create a Service Level Agreement establishing the use of secure chat in EPIC whenever there are concerns related to a patient’s lab orders. This proactive solution not only resolved the member’s complaint, but also strengthened communication between departments, improved customer service, and improved patient safety moving forward.
Through every role—caregiver, advocate, and leader—Peggy leads by example, with integrity and heart. Through dedication, kindness, and teamwork, Peggy ensures patients feel protected, families feel supported, and colleagues feel inspired by the standards of care she sets. Peggy's impact reaches far beyond individual encounters and truly embodies the spirit of the DAISY Award.
