Margaret Volz, an advanced nurse practitioner with Alaska CARES,
has been named Alaska’s first DAISY nurse. The DAISY Award is
a recognition award for extraordinary nurses across the country.
During an award ceremony on April 22, Margaret was honored by
nursing leadership and her peers at Alaska CARES, where children
receive evaluations for sexual and physical abuse. Margaret was
nominated for the award by her colleague, Alaska CARES mental
health therapist Rebecca Fleming, who described her as a gift to
Providence and our patients.
“I am constantly in awe of her wisdom, compassion, and
awareness to each detail that someone else might gloss over in
the rush that becomes trauma response. It is her cadence and
grace that create an environment that allows for both the family and child to begin the process of healing,” Rebecca said. “Marg exemplifies nursing through a phenomenal level of excellence of medical care, compassion toward her patients and families, as well as an approach of genuine kind intentionality that embodies the mission of the work we do at Providence.”
During the award ceremony at Alaska CARES, Director of Nursing Practice Carrie Doyle described the history of the DAISY award and presented Margaret with a series of symbolic gifts that all DAISY nurses receive, including an award certificate, a pin and a sculpture.
“As a result of their experience, The Barnes family believes that nurses are unsung heroes of our society who deserve far more recognition and honor than they receive,” said Carrie. “They decided to find a way to go around the country and say thank you to nurses.”
