I am a disabled Veteran with fairly severe anxiety disorder that is aggravated by anything healthcare-related. When I first met Ms. Wayland, I was exceedingly nervous about ending a nearly 10-year relationship with my prior provider, with whom I had worked very hard to build trust. It was time for my annual exam, and I was not able to complete the exam. Ms. Wayland, based on her active duty experience, asked very gently if I had been sexually assaulted on active duty, which I was, and as a result, it made perfect sense that an exam would bring up unpleasant memories. Once I saw the connection Ms. Wayland helped me create a plan to bring a trusted friend to the exam. We rescheduled, and several weeks later I returned with a friend. Because of Marguerite Wayland's professionalism and calm demeanor, the visit went without difficulties. I realized afterward that not only had we accomplished what we set out to do, but I had experienced profound healing as a result. Ms. Wayland's regard for my situation combined with her loving kindness and willingness to find a safe, workable solution in a situation that was so loaded with triggers has helped me to continue to lessen my anxiety whenever I am in a healthcare situation.
