I had received a call from a caseworker at PVH stating that a Veteran was sitting at the bedside of his dying wife, but he had run out of his meds. I looked up the Veteran and found that his PACT RN is Maria Nehls, and I reached out to her. I explained the situation and gave her the contact information for the case manager. Maria was able to get the Veteran his medications ordered to be filled by the PVH outpatient pharmacy so he could be with his wife during her final days. Today, I was alerted by the case manager at PVH that the Veteran’s wife had passed away, and she was having trouble reaching Maria. I again reached out to Maria and explained that the Veteran was heading home, a 3+ hour drive from PVH. Maria was so kind to ensure that we followed up with the Veteran to make sure he made it home safely and that we offered additional support during his time of grief. Maria also took the time to circle back to me and close that communication loop. I really appreciate her showing the ICare values and for being such a great team player in this situation.
