Maria went out and purchased a pair of tennis shoes to help support his feet as he was walking on the unit.
Maria is very helpful to the patients, their families, and to her co-workers. She treats us with dignity and respect. She’s attentive to the needs of her patients and families. She is kind, thoughtful, and professional. The patients and families are kept informed about their hospital stay and the plan of care when known. She will contact individuals to help get answers to the questions asked if she does not know the answers herself. Because she’s bilingual many approach her to ask questions. She’s humble and doesn’t turn anyone away. She will answer the questions and help as much as she’s capable to resolve the concerns of others.

We had a patient who was transferred to our unit who did not speak initially due to his illness. He was not from the United States. He worked with a group who traveled from state to state working as painters. When he became ill, he had friends who would check on him and bring items. As his stay became longer and longer the friends did not visit much and eventually stopped completely. The patient’s speech improved, and he began to speak Spanish to Maria and others. He arrived at the hospital without ID. His point of care was difficult because of the lack of information. Through their conversations, his name was shared and other patient information. Through much investigation, his identity was found. This eventually allowed the social worker to locate a place for him to live. He would walk frequently in his golden socks in the hallway. This was not good on his feet. The blue sandals were given but they did not fit properly. Maria went out and purchased a pair of tennis shoes to help support his feet as he was walking on the unit. As she helped this patient, she was also helpful toward others. I appreciate the care and compassion she delivers to her patients and their families. She truly cares.
