Being a change agent and shifting the mindset of employees is not an easy feat. This talent comes to Maria with ease. Maria's caring model of leadership has allowed her to succeed in changing the mindset and culture of the unit. Maria exhibits true, authentic leadership. Each and every time a new initiative or change is necessary, whether for practice or improvement, Maria begins with a yes. An example is the implementation of the Gemba boards to improve the quality of care. Her excitement was contagious, and she was able to mobilize her staff to believe they could make a difference. Staff feel supported and outwardly describe her as a thoughtful, genuine leader who listens. When I round on the floor, many nurses offer their gratitude for having her as their leader. She exhibits presence and exemplary leadership in all she does.

Maria embodies all of the leadership qualities that foster respect, teamwork and hard work on her unit. Maria is a strong advocate both for our patients and her staff. She demonstrates this in her frequent interactions with staff, rounding on her unit, and encouraging teamwork and exceptional care. She builds a sense of teamwork by hosting "Bagel Friday," to which staff from all units are invited! She truly is a rock star!
