Maria De Los Angeles Whyte, DHSc, ARNP was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico into a military family; she spent her early years traveling around the world. Married in 1986 to Dr. James Whyte, she identified education as something that was very important to her. She started her college education in Yucca Valley, California and quickly chose Nursing as her major. Her nursing education began at the Technical College of the Low Country in Beaufort, SC where she obtained her Associates in Nursing. Followed by her BSN from the University of South Carolina-Aiken, and Masters-Family Nurse Practitioner from Clarkson College, Omaha Nebraska.
Throughout her nursing practice, she has worked in hospitals and clinics, preferring the underserved and vulnerable populations. She feels blessed to have opportunities to work in migrant clinics and clinics for vulnerable populations for more than 25 years. Through volunteer opportunities and HRSA grants, she has worked in many clinics in Georgia and South Carolina. She has worked providing primary care and infectious disease care as a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Her love for teaching was inspired in 2002, with an opportunity to teach a pediatric clinical section at Valdosta State University (VSU). The following year she began teaching full-time at VSU in the maternal child course. Her passion for simulation ignited while at VSU, and she will be forever thankful to Dr. Debbie Weaver for the experience. After obtaining her Doctoral degree from Nova Southeastern University, she reestablished the Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) program at VSU and graduated the first ANP class in 10 years.
Since 2013, she has been working in the simulation and clinical labs at the College of Nursing. Her focus has been to fuel the same passion she has had during her career for nursing, and the underserved and vulnerable populations in the next generation of nurses. Her scholarship and research are focused on underserved and vulnerable populations, interprofessional education, and service. Her door is always open to students. She enjoys working with nursing students, and students involved in the Health Occupations Students of America organization at Florida State University.
